A ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON THE ROLE OF THE GOAT IN THE SOCIETY DURING THE 20th CENTURY
During the 20th century, a very noticeable evolution of goat farming and
of its products has taken place in France and in the near countries. In
this beginning of the 21st century, it is important to wonder how and why
we have reached the current situation of this farming, and especially to
have a reflection on its role towards the society. Actually, by these means,
we hope to demonstrate that the problems presently encountered by this farming
at the management of environment level, as well as the quality of the products
or on how to meet the social demand are not very recent. In that aim, it
might be interesting to know how they have been solved in the previous century.
This workshop is organized by the Société Française
d'Ethnozootechnie. It has been held the 12th of December 2002
near Poitiers in the most important goat farming region of France. But this
workshop has dealt also with specific questions of other French regions
and of countries such as Switzerland or Italy. This workshop is of full
concern for all those interested by goat farming, by its past and its future.
The speakers were of various origins such as the INRA, the Institut de l'Elevage
and the Chambres d'Agriculture and especially persons very found of goats.
The International Goat Center of Poitou-Charentes was in charge of its organization.
Two international organizations : the European Association for Animal Production
and the International Goat Association have supported this workshop.
