2009 Country Report from NigeriaSent in by Kayode Sonibare, IGA Country Representative
There are many on going research activities on goats in Nigeria as soon as the results are published it will be communicated after obtaining the researcher consent.
The strengt of goats in Nigeria is very high (39 million) but most of these goats are owned by very poor resource people in the rural areas who do not have any form assistance from the Government. The research on goats are privately financed by mostly students either on PhD or Masters degree programmes. There are presently no intenseively managed goat farmers in Nigeria, as a result of this the potentials of Nigerian goats could not be adequately harness for commercial purpose especially Red Sokoto Breed which noted for high quality leather (Morroco leather).
